WILLOWMORE
Tre settimane fa abbiamo fatto un viaggio con il gruppo di YFC e siamo stati per una settimana a Willowmore, che si trova nella zona più interna del Sudafrica.
Lì abbiamo fatto attività con bambini di diversi villaggi ed è stata un’esperienza davvero forte. I bambini con i quali lavoravamo sono figli di pastori, che lavorano dalla mattina alla sera nei terreni della zona, quindi sono persone molto umili.
La prima cosa che abbiamo subito notato è stata la differenza dei bambini con i quali lavoravamo, rispetto a quelli con cui siamo abituati a lavorare a Knysna. Questi bambini sono molto più poveri, non hanno praticamente nulla, e sono molto umili, si accontentano di ogni piccola cosa e sono davvero legati tra di loro, proprio come una grande famiglia allargata. Sono bambini diversi anche perchè nelle case non soffrono di alcuna violenza, hanno genitori che li amano e li educano a fare del bene, l’unico problema è la grande povertà che c’è.
La zona di Willowmore è una delle zone più secche del Sudafrica, e l’intera comunità soffre perchè non c’è acqua, quindi gli animali muoiono, i terreni sono secchi e nelle case non c’è sufficiente acqua, quindi anche i bambini sono disidratati e non bevono quanto dovrebbero.
Una delle cose che mi ha colpito in particolar modo è stato vedere come queste persone, che vivono nella povertà più assoluta, abbiano una fede così grande in Dio. Una sera siamo stati invitati nella chiesa del villaggio, dove i pastori avevano organizzato una serata di lode e preghiera per la pioggia, e mi ha colpito molto vedere come lodassero Dio, nonostante tutte le difficoltà con le quali vivono, con una grande gioia e devozione.
E’ stata anche una bella esperienza che abbiamo vissuto come gruppo di YFC, abbiamo legato molto tra di noi, proprio perchè vivevamo 24 su 24 insieme, abbiamo sopportato insieme il caldo angosciante, il vento bollente, ma soprattutto abbiamo vissuto momenti indimenticabili insieme a questa comunità… e abbiamo mangiato così tanta carne! Tutti i giorni tutto il giorno…..!
Una delle mie cose preferite è stato vedere come in una sola settimana questi bambini hanno iniziato a legare con noi, inizialmente erano timidi, non parlavano molto, e poi hanno iniziato ad aprirsi sempre di più.
Uno dei miei ricordi preferiti è stato l’ultima sera; noi volontari stavamo guardando un meraviglioso tramonto sul tetto della fattoria, quando in lontananza abbiamo visto i bambini che ci stavano spiando timidamente, allora li abbiamo chiamati verso di noi. Quindi ci sono venuti incontro, questo gruppettino di 6 bambini, tutti di età diverse. Si sono seduti con noi davanti al tramonto e sono rimasti lì, pur non parlando la stessa lingua e pur avendo età diverse, loro volevano stare lì con noi. E questa è stata una cosa che mi ha colpito davvero tanto.
Il terzo giorno invece abbiamo vissuto una delle esperienze più pazze ed energetiche. Ci hanno chiesto di intrattenere una scuola elementare di questo villaggio per un’ora. Quindi ci siamo preparati con qualche ballo e con una breve storia della bibbia da raccontare. E’ stato adrenalina pura. Ci siamo ritrovati a ballare, con 43 gradi e sole a picchio, davanti a 300 bambini che ci seguivano passo per passo, cantavano con noi, gridavano con noi, e non smettevano di sorridere!
E’ un’esperienza che non dimenticherò mai. La parola che racchiude quella settimana è ‘grateful’ ovvero ‘gratitudine’. Ho realizzato cosa significa essere grati, essere riconoscenti a Dio. Non è una parola che dobbiamo usare solo quando tutto quanto va bene e non c’è sofferenza, ma dobbiamo essere grati tutti i giorni per quello che abbiamo!
Ad insegnarmi questo è stata una comunità povera e umile di persone che non smettevano mai di sorridere e ringraziare Dio per le loro vite. Vedere la gioia in queste persone mi ha fatto riflettere ancora una volta così tanto su quanto prendo per scontato.

Three weeks ago we travelled with our YFC family to Willowmore where we spent a whole week. Willowmore is located in the internal part of South Africa.
We ran lots of activities with the kids of these communities there, and it was an amazing experience. One group of kids we were working with are the children of the workers on the farm who work everyday from morning to evening in the land of Willowmore. What I really loved about them is that they were very humble people.
One of the first things I realized was that these kids were completely different from the ones we are used to work with here in Knysna. The kids from Willowmore are very poor and they really don’t have anything. But yet they’re so humble, they appreciate every small thing and they’re very close with each other like a big family. What also makes a big difference is that they don’t experience any violence in their homes; their parents love them and raise them very diciplined. But one of the biggest problems they have is the poverty.
Willowmore is one of the driest places here in South Africa. It didn’t rain properly there for years and as a consequence of that the land suffers an extreme draught. The animals on the farm die because of the extreme water shortage, and the people are forced to limit the amount of water they use in their houses.
What really touched me was to see how strong their faith in God is despite their circumstances. One evening the owner of the farm invited us to their church where the pastor organized a worship night to pray for rain. It really shocked me to see how they were worshiping God through the midst of their struggles and how they devoted themselves completely to Him.
Our stay in Willowmore was also an amazing time for us as a YFC family because we really bonded with each other and became even closer. We lived 24/7 together and as a family we survived the hot weather and the hot wind, but most importantly we experinced the most amazing moments with the farmers… not to mention that we ate A LOT! Especially meat, everyday, whenever there was something to eat!
One of my favorite things to experience was to see how the kids changed during the week. At the beginning of our ministry there they were quiet shy and didn’t talk a lot. But throughout the week they started to open up to us everyday more.
My favorite memory of this week took place on the last evening. We (us volunteers) climbed on the roof of a stable outside to watch the sunset. And as we were sitting there we saw few of the kids from the farmworkers, that lived in houses not far away, looking at us trying not to be seen. So we called them and a little group of about six kids ran towards us. They climbed up the rood and sat there with us, not saying anything. It didn’t matter that we barely understud each other, they just enjoyed the moment with us.
On the third day we experienced a very cazy and energetic moment. A school in the city of Willowmore asked us to make an assembly for one hour. So we prepared a few dances and a bible story to share with them. It was the most adrenalinic moment of my life! We were dancing in front of 300 kids that stayed under the burning sun with 43°! They were following us in every step and couldn’t stop singing and dancing and smiling!
It was an experience that I’ll never forget. The word that describes the week the most is ‘grateful’. In Willowmore I learned what it means to be grateful. To give thank to God in every situation even when nothing seems to be alright and not just when everything is working out as we want it to. We need to be grateful every single day in every situation for all the things we have!
The people there are a humble community of poor people that never stop smiling and thanking God for their lives. To see their joy made me realize once again of how many things I take for granted.
